The fungal kingdom is poorly understood by many people despite playing an essential role in ecosystem functioning. In addition to recycling decomposing matter, fungi can be used as both food and medicine, as well as for degrading persistent environmental toxins. Partnering with these amazing organisms can be a critical component in building sustainable cultural systems.
There are many varieties of edible and mushrooms that can be safely cultured on forest products. In this workshop, we’ll explore two different cultivation methods: culturing oyster mushrooms on urban waste products (coffee grounds and cardboard), and growing shiitake mushrooms on logs. Participants will have a hands-on learning opportunity to incorporate into the RPI campus.
In addition, we’ll also discuss the ecology and sustainable uses of fungi, as well as methods for growing them in the home.
